Strunk and White's Elements of Style and William Safire's column, "On Language," provide help on diction and syntax to contemporary writers and speakers. McGuffey's Readers introduced nineteenth-century students to "correct" English. Who sets language policy today? Who made whom the grammar doctor? With Arkham Asylum, the pair would take Batman and combine it with the fringe sensibilities of their prior work.Īrkham Asylum is a psychological horror with a dual narratives. Morrison would go on to start their run on Animal Man and Doom Patrol, while McKean would collaborate on projects with, at the time, a mostly unknown Neil Gaiman on Black Orchard and covers for Sandman. Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth cover by Dave McKean. Grant Morrison and Dave McKean were both part of what was dubbed the British Invasion and would go on to work on projects that would operate in the weird fringes of DC Comics’ catalogue. This was spearheaded by legendary editor Karen Berger, and it uncovered creators such as Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Brian Bolland, and Dave Gibbons. In the 1980s, DC Comics were hiring writers and artists from the UK. But that’s that what writer Grant Morisson and artist Dave McKean did in the eerie 1989 Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth. ![]() While Batman has covered many genres over the years, psychological horror is not a genre that you would usually associate with him. ![]() ![]() ![]() A published author of historical articles, Russell saw value in Jennings’s stories of the Madisons, and knew a forum where they could be presented to the reading public. Russell seems to have provided the catalyst. He could have written down his recollections himself, had he wished. Eventually, Jennings purchased his freedom and took a job in the Pension Office in Washington, where his anecdotes about the Madisons caught the attention of Russell, a colleague. Born into slavery at Montpelier, he was a dining room servant at the White House and a body servant to Madison during the president’s retirement. ![]() Paul Jennings could certainly recollect an eventful life. In the preface to A Colored Man’s Reminiscences of James Madison (1863), John Brooks Russell explained the project’s genesis: “as was a daily witness to interesting events, I have thought some of his recollections were worth writing down in almost his own language.” ![]() ![]() Online reading The Horsemasters Daughter and summary + reviews. Today we start off with the second novel from David Alderman in the Black Earth Series, The Broken Daisy. Hello and welcome to another Self-Published Sunday. In the midst of the darkness, those still alive are forced to fight against Legion's malevolence or lose their humanity beneath it. Surrounded by suspicion and doubt, Nathan struggles to stay one step ahead of the world that's against him, and keep tabs on Cynthia, who may or may not end up selling him out in the end. But Cynthia's mother, Theresa, is the one who betrayed Nathan and Daisy. ![]() With a bounty on his head, Nathan finds an unexpected ally in Cynthia Ruin, who agrees to help him save his sister, Daisy, from being executed for treason. ![]() Nathan Pierce is on the run for forging the president's mandatory barcode tattoo. Now Legion is enveloping the world in darkness, disintegrating almost everything in its path and leaving nothing to stand in its way of the planet's destruction. It is a message left by Legion, an otherworldly entity that traveled to Earth in the fallen stars. "From dust you came, to ash you go." - These terrifying words are found spray-painted on an office wall in Tucson. The stars have fallen, and the world is tilting into darkness. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie Preferences, as described in the Cookie Notice. Pros: This book is tough to read, but I couldn’t put it down and read it in less than a day. Della decides the wolf is her favorite animal, and as the days with Francine go by, she learns to be strong like the wolf, but also to lean on the strengths of the rest of her pack. And when Suki finally finds her pain unbearable, doctors and therapists are available to help her. A girl named Nevaeh reaches out to Della and becomes a friend. Francine turns out to be an unlikely, no-nonsense heroine. The unremittingly grim trajectory of their lives, though, begins to change. And how, slowly, Della realizes with horror what has been happening to Suki for years. It’s not until many pages later that the reader learns how Clifton, the mother’s boyfriend that the girls ended up living with, tried to molest Della. But, Della continues, that’s not the hard part of the story. Early on, Della tells how her mother got sent to jail several years before for setting fire to a hotel room while cooking meth with both girls in the hotel with her. ![]() It’s pretty clear from page 1 that some horrible things have happened to them. Summary: Della and her older sister Suki have just been placed in foster care with Francine. Choosing an exclusive private school in Los Angeles as a backdrop, the author dresses the mega-wealthy youth of Beverly Hills and Bel Air in Dior, Marc Jacobs and Jimmy Choo, and has them roar to school in Porsches and Jaguars, while fish-out-of-water twins Janie and Jake Farrish, scholarship students from the Valley, shop at Goodwill and share ownership of a 16-year-old Volvo. ![]() Prep and the newly named teen fashion label POSEUR introduces this seasons. The same gleeful exaggeration applies to Janie's three classmates in a special studies course focusing on fashion design: there's Charlotte, bored after a week of a summer intensive embroidery studies at a convent in Bruges, who arranges a midnight escape by chopper Melissa, daughter of the rap producer Seedy, who announces, “In the grand tradition of Jennifer Lopez and Oprah, I dream to be more than just a person. I dream to be a brand” and Petra, the ridiculously beautiful daughter of the most sought-after plastic surgeon in Hollywood, who tendentiously deplores vanity and wants to create an anti-fashion clothing line called Moral Fiber. ![]() Though the plot is predictable and the pacing uneven, the novel dishes up outsize amounts of humor, mostly at the expense of Maude's narcissistic characters. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Henry v by william shakespeare pdf![]() ![]() In short, then, far from being a narrow celebration of war and English military triumph, Henry V shows Shakespeare’s talent for showing contrary sides to warfare and heroism, allowing numerous generations of readers, theatregoers, directors, critics, and students to find a multitude of differing and contradictory attitudes to these themes within its lines. The fact that the French Dauphin’s insulting slight – the gift of tennis balls – is the last straw for him tells us something about the King’s headstrong side: he is impetuous, even rash, as well as courageous and commanding. Henry’s very motivation for embarking on his campaign is dubious, and his claim is far from clear. Indeed, recent criticism of Henry V (and, for that matter, criticism of Henry V the man) has denounced him as a war criminal, especially for his ruthless order to cut the throats of the French soldiers at Harfleur. Indeed, he has few friends and close confidants in the play, and even the men serving under him take against him (when they little suspect him of being monarch, and think their heads are safe). Few people who met Henry V in person would warm to him, one suspects. ![]() ![]() ![]() ‘We like him in the play’ shows Hazlitt’s genius for criticism: at once disarmingly simple (indeed, almost childlike in its simplicity) and yet striking at the heart of what we know to be true. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments A farewell to arms novel![]() ![]() ![]() Rinaldi is the friend of Henry, he is a lieutenant and he works as a surgeon in the hospital.
