She combines different registers and rhythms, and weaves together threads of different kinds of privilege, whiteness, sexual assault, and trauma. Gurba’s prose is dark and sparse, potent yet playful. “It’s okay for ghosts to exist through me,” she writes. Years later, Torres’s ghostly presence continues to make itself known, and Gurba has made her peace with this. The story begins with the rape and murder of Sophia Castro Torres. Gurba had a Mexican feminist mother and a half-Polish father, and a mother tongue of English, Spanish, and some Nahuatl. MEAN, a series of vignettes released by Coffee House Press in November 2017, is a memoir in which Myriam Gurba explores how it felt to grow up as a queer Chicana in Southern California.

Their small group of humans has been stranded on the planet for 70 years and kept there by an alien race called the Krell. Spensa was able to prove herself as a pilot and as the daughter of a pilot branded a coward by her whole society, small as it is, on a far-flung planet called Detritus. With all those elements, these actually remind me of Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff’s two series, the Illuminae Files and the Aurora Cycle. Brandon Sanderson has crafted an entertaining and adventure-filled set of books, with quirky characters you have to love and clever humor scattered liberally throughout. I am so pleased Rated Reads reviewer Meaghan introduced this series to me with her review of Skyward because I am enjoying it so much. IN SHORT: This clean young adult book is so fun: space, aliens and adventure. One of the strange things about really old friendships is that the past is both important and not important. (I'm reasonably sure it was an LT recommendation a couple of years ago, thank you to whoever it was that reviewed it so positively then). Possibly the best read of the year so far. Even though we create our selves, is our self still real? Do we choose what to remember and what to forget? Where does the self come from? Is it made of memories, of the things that we gather around us, do we create it from will power? The narrator is a playwright, Molly an actor, Andrew (the third friend) someone who has transformed himself from his poor Belfast origins into a poised and mellifluous television art historian so another theme is realness, authenticity and artifice, and what this means in terms of the self. Not much to build a story on, you might think, but this was tremendous - an engaging story of the dynamics within friendships but also an examination of what humans are. She thinks back over the two decades of her relationship with that friend, Molly Fox, and another friend who was at university with both of them. A woman stays in the house of an old friend while that old friend is away. 6/23/2023 0 Comments Us david nichollsNarrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger.ĭavid Nicholls is a British author, screenwriter, and actor. Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage and might even help him bond with Albie. And maybe going ahead with the original plan is for the best anyway. Hoping to encourage her son’s artistic interests, Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. Now, almost three decades after their relationship first blossomed in London, they live more or less happily in the suburbs with their moody seventeen-year-old son, Albie then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that, against all odds, seduces beautiful Connie into a second date and eventually into marriage. 6/23/2023 0 Comments Chainsaw confidential bookSo finally, I thought this would be a good time to write one that tells the inside story of Chainsaw but also talks about the film’s place in horror-why there are people who absolutely despise the movie, why there are people who absolutely adore the movie. “Over the years, people have asked me if I would write a book about Chainsaw, and I thought about it a lot, and I decided I’d like to but didn’t want to do a book that was just about making the movie,” he tells us. The horrifying tale of Chainsaw’s production and distribution fate has been oft-told, but Hansen reveals that his tome takes a different tack. Hansen gave us the full scoop on the book.
